Pet-Friendly Hotels on Lake Garda
Lake Garda draws more pet-travelling families than any other Italian lake — and it shows in the infrastructure: dedicated dog beaches with sunbeds and welcome kits, lakeside cycle paths, and hundreds of hotels that say “pets allowed”. The catch is that “allowed” can mean anything, from a genuine welcome to a surcharge and a no-go list of rooms. Dog beaches on Lake Garda
Garda has something rare in Italy: properly equipped dog beaches (“Bau Beaches”) with sunbeds, shade and services, not just tolerated strips of shore. The four best known are Braccobaldo Bau Beach in Peschiera del Garda (Località Fornaci), Giulietta Dog Beach in Lazise (Strada della Ponta), Fido Beach in Manerba del Garda, and the Bau Beach at Toscolano Maderno.
Town beaches follow each comune’s own rules, which change season to season. Sirmione, for example, allows dogs on a lead on three designated beaches (Spiaggia delle Muse, Punta Grò and Brema), while Peschiera’s town beaches are off-limits to dogs from May to September — which is exactly what Braccobaldo Bau Beach is for. For longer walks, the lakeside cycle-pedestrian path linking Lazise, Bardolino and Garda is an easy, scenic outing with a dog on a lead.
Dogs on Lake Garda ferries: the rules
The Navigazione Laghi ferries connect the lake’s towns and make the best car-free day trips. Dogs travel on the ferries and catamarans, but not on the fast hydrofoils — on those, only a small dog or cat in a carrier held on your lap. Keep your dog on a fixed lead of max 1.5 m and carry a muzzle to fit if the captain asks. Small dogs (under 50 cm at the withers) travel free; larger dogs pay the reduced fare for the route. Guide dogs travel free with no restrictions. Dogs can’t occupy seats or enter the dining areas, and the captain may refuse an aggressive or unmanageable dog.
