Getting to & around Île de Ré with a dog

The island hangs off La Rochelle by a three-kilometre toll bridge — no ferry needed. By rail, La Rochelle is the point of entry (small dogs in a bag at a flat fee, larger dogs on lead-and-muzzle at reduced fare on French trains), and buses cross the bridge to the villages (operator pet rules apply — check locally). Once on the island, do as the islanders do and cycle: the network of dedicated paths runs past vines, salt pans and pinewoods, and the rental shops in every village stock dog trailers and front baskets for exactly this purpose. Distances are small; nothing on the island is more than a relaxed hour’s ride away.

Best walks, beaches & places for dogs on Île de Ré

In July and August the island’s communes restrict the main bathing beaches during the day, but dogs get the good hours: as a working rule, early morning and evening — before ~9:00 and after ~19:00 — with the exact windows set by each village’s arrêté, so read the beach-entry boards. On the wilder north-west end, the Conche des Baleines and Côte Sauvage stretches admit leashed dogs overnight-to-morning (19:00–9:00) in the peak weeks; at Le Bois-Plage, the Gouillauds beach tolerates leashed dogs through the season. Off-season, nearly everything relaxes and the island is a dog’s free run of hard sand. Beyond the beaches: Saint-Martin’s ramparts-and-harbour loop (terrace cafés included), the Trousse-Chemise pinewood of song fame, the salt-marsh paths around Loix where egrets lift off the pans, and the dune walk to the Phare des Baleines lighthouse.

Domande frequenti

Can my dog go on the beach on Île de Ré in summer?

Yes, on the dog schedule: in July–August the main beaches are closed to dogs during the day, but morning and evening windows apply (typically before ~9:00 and after ~19:00), and the Conche des Baleines / Côte Sauvage end runs a 19:00–9:00 leashed regime in peak season. Each commune sets its own arrêté — read the boards, and enjoy free rein off-season.

Can I cycle with my dog on the island?

That is the island’s signature: flat, car-free paths and rental shops that stock dog trailers and baskets in every main village. Book the trailer with the bikes in high season.

Is Saint-Martin-de-Ré good with a dog?

The best evening in the Charente: the Vauban ramparts loop, the harbour quays and the market lanes all walk beautifully on a lead, and the terraces are dog-tolerant by long habit. The citadel’s grassed glacis makes the morning circuit.

Do hotels on Île de Ré charge a pet fee?

It varies — the five-star houses charge formal per-night fees, village hotels often take one dog free. Every TrustPaws listing states the exact, verified policy and fee before you book.
