Pet-Friendly Hotels In Forte dei Marmi
Looking for a genuinely dog-friendly hotel in Forte dei Marmi? Italy’s most exclusive beach town sits on the Versilia coast with the Apuan Alps behind it, and it suits a dog better than its reputation suggests. The flat grid of tree-lined streets and the 275 m wooden pontile make easy leashed walks, several bathing establishments in Forte dei Marmi welcome pets, and Bau Beach at Marina di Carrara, about 10 km north, is laid out for people travelling with dogs. The catch is size: the town’s 5-star hotels mostly cap dogs at 5 to 10 kg.
Below are three 5-star hotels, a 4-star boutique spa hotel with a free welcome kit and four further 4-star hotels between the seafront and Via Mazzini. We checked each hotel’s published dog policy, fee and room rules; several list pets as allowed without publishing a fee, and the cards say so. Where a fee is published it runs from nothing to EUR 30 per dog per night.

Getting To & Around Forte dei Marmi With A Dog
The nearest airport is Pisa, about 40 km away. By rail, use Forte dei Marmi–Seravezza–Querceta station on the Pisa–La Spezia line: Trenitalia carries small pets free in a carrier up to 70 x 30 x 50 cm, and larger dogs on a lead and muzzle with a EUR 5 ticket (EUR 1 on Saturdays) on Intercity, Frecce and Regional trains, except those marked in the timetable.
The town itself is flat and built on a grid of tree-lined streets, so most people walk or cycle; Hotel Franceschi lends bicycles to guests. Keep the dog on a lead in the streets and, under Tuscan regional law, everywhere on the beach outside a designated dog area.
The beach is the main thing to plan around. Forte dei Marmi’s own summer beach ordinance is set locally each season, and in the past the mayor has banned animals from the beaches during parties and events, so check the current rules on the spot before taking a dog onto the sand.
Dogs On Versilia Beaches — The Rules
• Tuscan regional law 59/2009 lets each comune designate dog areas on the beach where dogs may run free; outside them dogs stay on the lead.
• At an ordinary bathing establishment that admits dogs, the dog must stay on the lead, under the umbrella, and may not enter the water unleashed; violations are fined.
• Neighbouring Viareggio (ordinance valid to 15 October 2026): dogs may use the free beaches and swim in front of them all day, microchipped and registered, leashed, with a muzzle carried, water, shade and immediate clean-up.
• In Viareggio, paid establishments must let dog owners cross to the shore.
• Forte dei Marmi has previously banned animals from its beaches during parties and events; check the current summer ordinance locally.
Beaches & Walks For Dogs In Forte dei Marmi
The sea is the draw, but choosing a dog-friendly hotel in Forte dei Marmi also puts pine woods, the pier and a long villa-lined grid within a lead’s length. Dogs stay leashed on any beach outside a designated dog area.
Pontile di Forte dei Marmi — The 275 m wooden pier, rebuilt after the Second World War on the site of the old marble-loading jetty, is the town’s classic sunset walk, with views back to the Apuan Alps. Leads on.
Historic villas and the market — The regional tourism board recommends a bike ride among the historic villas and a wander past the elegant market stalls; the flat grid of tree-lined streets suits a leashed dog on foot just as well.
Parco della Versiliana (Marina di Pietrasanta) — An 80-hectare pine wood with over 1 km of coastline between Marina di Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi, with three marked trails and free guided nature walks in July and August. Dog rules are not published, so keep the lead on and read the signs.
Marina di Torre del Lago free beach (Viareggio) — An extensive free beach south of Viareggio where you can go onto the sand with your dog, according to the regional tourism board. Take a lead, a muzzle, water and shade, as Viareggio’s free-beach rules require.
Dog-Friendly Extras In Forte dei Marmi
Bau Beach, Marina di Carrara — A stretch of coast about 10 km north designed to accommodate people travelling with dogs.
Dog-friendly bagni in Versilia — Several bathing establishments in Forte dei Marmi, Lido di Camaiore, Marina di Pietrasanta and Viareggio welcome pets; under the regional law the dog stays leashed under the umbrella.
Viareggio free beaches — Dogs may swim all day on Viareggio’s spiagge libere under the 2026 ordinance, valid to 15 October 2026.
