Pet-Friendly Hotels in Stresa
Looking for a genuinely dog-friendly hotel in Stresa? The grand-hotel town on the western shore of Lake Maggiore works well with a dog. The flat lungolago promenade runs past gardens and 19th-century villas, the public boats to Isola Bella (EUR 5 adult fare) and Isola Madre (EUR 6) carry dogs, and Villa Taranto’s botanical gardens in Verbania, about fifteen minutes away, admit dogs on a short lead. Two things to know before you book: the Stresa–Mottarone cable car is closed with no reopening date, and the Borromean Islands themselves publish no pet policy, so phone ahead.
The eight hotels below range from 5-star palaces on Corso Umberto I with dog menus and concierge dog-sitting to solid 4-star and 3-star options with welcome kits. For each one we checked the published dog policy, the fee and which rooms take dogs; where a hotel does not state a fee or a size limit, the card says so and you should ask when booking. Published fees run from no charge to EUR 35 per pet per night.

Getting To & Around Stresa With A Dog
Stresa has its own Trenitalia station on the Milan–Domodossola line, and the nearest airport is Milan Malpensa. On Trenitalia, small dogs travel free in a carrier up to 70 x 30 x 50 cm; one dog of any size per passenger rides on a lead and muzzle with its own ticket, EUR 5 from Sunday to Friday and EUR 1 on Saturdays, on Intercity, Frecce and most Regional trains, though not in Premium, Quiet Zone or private compartments.
Once you arrive, the town is walkable and the Navigazione Laghi boats are the main way to explore. Dogs are accepted on all scheduled sailings around the lake and to the islands: carry a muzzle, keep the lead to 1.50 m and expect the captain to ask for the muzzle on busy boats. The Stresa–Mottarone cable car is closed with no reopening date, so plan to reach the Mottarone trailheads by road.
Keep the dog on a lead in town and along the lungolago. If you want to land on Isola Bella or Isola Madre, phone the Isole Borromee office on +39 0323 933478 before buying tickets, because the official visitor information mentions only guide dogs.
Dogs On Lake Maggiore Boats — The Rules
- Dogs under 50 cm at the withers travel free; medium and large dogs pay the reduced child fare (the adult fare is EUR 5 Stresa–Isola Bella and EUR 6 Stresa–Isola Madre).
- Medium and large dogs wear a muzzle and a short lead at all times on board; small dogs are leashed or held on the lap.
- The lead may be no longer than 1.50 m, and you must carry a muzzle, rigid or soft, even for a small dog.
- The captain can limit or refuse dogs on very crowded sailings; a dog that will not accept the muzzle is put ashore at the next stop.
- Dogs never occupy a seat; guide dogs and working police or rescue dogs are exempt from the ticket.
Beaches & Walks For Dogs In Stresa
From any dog-friendly hotel in Stresa the walking is about the lakeshore, the gardens and the mountain behind the town rather than sand. Leads on in town, and pack the muzzle for any boat leg.
Stresa lungolago — An elegant, flat promenade with gardens and flowerbeds running between the Borromean Gulf and the 19th-century villas and grand hotels, lined with cafés. Leads on in town; it is the morning and evening walk from any Corso Umberto I hotel.
Villa Taranto botanical gardens (Verbania) — Dogs are welcome on the pedestrian paths of the botanical garden at Verbania Pallanza, about 15 minutes from Stresa, provided they stay on a short lead at all times. Tickets are sold online only; in summer 2026 last entry is 5.30 pm and the gates close at 6.30 pm.
Mottarone hiking trails — The 1,491 m mountain above Stresa has panoramic summer trails and the Alpinia Botanic Garden on its slopes between Stresa and Gignese. With the cable car closed, reach the trailheads by road.
Boat trip to the Borromean Islands — Regular Navigazione Laghi boats to Isola Bella (EUR 5 adult fare) and Isola Madre (EUR 6) take dogs: small dogs free, larger dogs at the reduced fare, muzzle and short lead on board. Phone the islands’ office first to ask whether your dog can enter the palaces and gardens.
