Pet-Friendly Hotels On Lake Maggiore

TrustPaws covers Stresa first, with eight hotels checked for their dog policy, fee and rooms, from 5-star palaces on Corso Umberto I with dog menus and concierge dog-sitting to a 3-star hotel that supplies beds, bowls and toys. One tip before you plan an island day: the Isole Borromee publish no pet policy beyond guide dogs, so phone +39 0323 933478 before buying tickets, and do not count on the Stresa–Mottarone cable car, which is closed with no reopening date.

Travelling On Lake Maggiore With A Dog

The boats are the backbone of a Lake Maggiore trip. Under the Navigazione Laghi tariff in force from 1 April 2026, dogs under 50 cm at the withers sail free and medium and large dogs pay the reduced fare; every dog needs a lead no longer than 1.50 m and a muzzle carried on board, the captain can require it or limit dogs on crowded sailings, and animals may never occupy a seat. Small dogs in a bag or basket travel free.

Trenitalia serves Stresa directly: small pets ride free in a carrier up to 70 x 30 x 50 cm, and a larger dog travels leashed and muzzled with its own ticket: half the second-class fare on Regional trains, or EUR 5 (EUR 1 on Saturdays) on Frecce and Intercity. Keep the dog on a lead in town, and in an emergency call 112; Clinica Veterinaria San Giovanni in Verbania-Intra runs a 24-hour service.

Orta San Giulio, on neighbouring Lake Orta, is the next guide in this hub.

How TrustPaws verifies a hotel

A TrustPaws badge means we’ve checked more than a “pets allowed” box. For every certified hotel, we verify:

  • The real pet policy and any fees — exactly what you’ll pay, with no surprises at check-in.
  • Which room types pets can actually stay in.
  • The welcome amenities genuinely provided — beds, bowls, treats, kits.
  • How genuinely the staff and grounds are set up for animals.

If a hotel hasn’t met the standard, it isn’t certified — simple as that.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I walk my dog in Stresa?

The flat lungolago promenade is the everyday walk, with the dog on a lead in town. Villa Taranto's botanical gardens in Verbania admit dogs on a short lead on the pedestrian paths (tickets online only), and the Mottarone trails above town are reachable by road while the cable car stays closed.

Can I take my dog on the boats to the Borromean Islands from Stresa?

Yes. Navigazione Laghi boats carry dogs on all scheduled sailings: dogs under 50 cm at the withers travel free, larger dogs pay the reduced child fare, and medium and large dogs must wear a muzzle and a short lead on board. The islands themselves publish no pet policy beyond guide dogs, so phone +39 0323 933478 before buying tickets.
